2 Military Vets Assist Miami Seaside Cops After Corvette Hit ATV; Driver arrested – WSVN 7News | Miami Information, Climate, Sports activities

MIAMI BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) – Two Good Samaritans rushed to the aid of a Miami Beach police officer who was involved in an accident that left the driver of a sports car handcuffed.

A vacation for U.S. Army veterans David Kelley and Michael Lane was interrupted early Sunday morning by an accident involving a small red Corvette and an officer’s SUV.

“Me and my buddy, we were both in the military for years, so our first reaction is to help, like when you see something happen you run straight for it,” Lane said.

“You hear the sound and see it happen and instinct prevails,” said Kelley. “You’re not really thinking.”

The crash occurred shortly after 4:30 a.m. at the intersection of Ninth Street and Washington Avenue in South Beach

According to the investigators, the officer responded to an emergency call when the Corvette did not yield to the officer and collided with him.

“I saw him fly in the air, over the hood and land and roll off the hood and onto the curb and everything else,” Lane said.

Kelley stormed in first, Lane right behind him, before Lane noticed his family sat in a dark SUV next to the Corvette.

The involvement of the SUV in the crash is unclear.

Kelley said the officer seemed dazed but okay.

“He was fine. He wasn’t bleeding too much, so at this point all officers were responding to the scene and treating him from there, so I pulled aside, ”Kelley said.

The officer was transported to Mount Sinai Medical Center, where he was treated for his injuries and released.

The Corvette driver, later identified as Nash Martin, was arrested and charged with driving with a revoked license.

As for Kelley and Lane, they said they were glad their military training and fate had them in the right place to help.

“I would help anyone, no matter who you are,” Kelley said.

Martin has since been released from prison.
