Miami Beach authorities closed parking on Ocean Drive in response to the coronavirus in Miami Beach, Florida on March 15, 2020. Parking will be closed during Memorial Day 2021 bank holiday weekends.
Parking headaches are a reminder of Memorial Day’s past that you certainly won’t want to repeat this weekend.
We can’t park your car for you, but we can keep you informed of the situation in some high profile locations so you can plan ahead.
Here’s what we know:
Miami Beach
While Memorial Day events are held in many communities, such as a memorial service in Coral Gables and the Great American Beach Party in Fort Lauderdale, South Beach is a zero point for tourists and crowds. This year, the Hyundai Air & Sea Show will be held on the beach and in Lummus Park on Saturday and Sunday May 29-30, so the draw alone requires a South Beach action plan.
Here you can find details about the part of the park.
▪ Starting at 7:00 p.m. Friday, all urban parking garages in the Art Deco Cultural District, which includes 5th through 23rd streets along Ocean Drive, Collins, and Washington Avenues, will charge a $ 20 per vehicle parking fee. This applies to everyone except for holders of access cards and residents.
▪ The garages: Seventh Street and Collins Avenue, 12th Street and Washington Avenue, 13th Street and Collins Avenue, and the Anchor Garage on 16th Street.
▪ That $ 20 price tag is good for a single entry and exit. That means park and stay. Or leave. However, getting on and off is not permitted.
Are you planning to park along Collins and Washington Avenues? I’m sure you’re kidding.
▪ Parking is prohibited on the street along Collins and Washington Avenues in the Art Deco Cultural District. Parking on the street between Collins Avenue and Ocean Drive and 5th and 15th Streets is only available to residents with a permit to park in Zone 5.
▪ A free Park Me Miami Beach app, available from the Apple Store or Google Play, can help you find parking spaces near the events so you don’t have to circle around looking for parking spaces and the congestion increase. According to the city, the mobile app shows available parking spaces and prices for land and garages, and provides real-time capacity information for specific facilities.
▪ Free parking shuttles. Miami Beach will provide specially marked Miami Beach trolleys and freebees to and from four designated event parking lots and signs will be posted.
The park shuttles run on Saturday, May 29th and Sunday, May 30th, at 15-minute intervals from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. (give or take a few minutes).
▪ Trolleys pick up and drop off passengers on Collins Avenue and 11th Street for the following parking locations:
Pick-up for the parking garage on 41st Street and Sheridan Avenue is at 219 Trolley Stop on Sheridan Avenue and 41st Street.
Pick-up for the parking garage on 23rd Street and Liberty Avenue is from the 194 Tram Stop on 23rd Street and Liberty Avenue.
Pick-up for 17th Street Parking, Pennsylvania Avenue Parking, and City Hall Parking is available from 200 Trolley Stop on 17th Street and Convention Center Drive.
Freebee picks up passengers in the 5th Street Garage and brings them back. Use the 113 tram stop on Sixth Street and Lenox Avenue to get off on 10th Street between Collins Avenue and Ocean Drive.
Anyone parking in the Fifth Street Garage can also use the regular SOBE Trolley Loops (A or B) to get to Collins Avenue and 11th Street.
Fort Lauderdale
▪ The city is hosting the Great American Beach Party at Las Olas Oceanside Park, 3000 E. Las Olas Blvd. Saturday, May 29th, from 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Enter Country Act Lonestar.
Downtown parking is within walking distance of the Riverwalk Center Garage in Fort Lauderdale, 150 SE Second St.. Hourly rates are $ 1.50 per hour for registered residents and $ 3 per hour for visitors.
A water taxi pick-up service runs non-stop to Las Olas Marina every 30 minutes from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Round-trip tickets are $ 5 per person and $ 2 for seniors. Active military and children up to 3 years are free. Visit www.watertaxi.com.
The stops: Stranahan House on the Riverwalk at 420 SE Sixth Ave. and Galleryone DoubleTree Hotel (next to Galleria Mall) at 2670 E. Sunrise Blvd. on the Intracoastal.
▪ The big event comes with a traffic consultation.
Las Olas Boulevard between A1A and Seabreeze Boulevard will be closed on Saturday, May 29th, from 5:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
A1A traffic heading north can access the U-turns on Poinsettia and Cortez Streets.
A1A traffic heading south can access a turn on Southeast Fifth Street.
City officials warn that heavy traffic is to be expected. Unless you’re driving to the beach party or anything else nearby, it might be a good idea to avoid the area or look for alternative routes or modes of transport.
Coral Gables
If you want to eat at Giralda Plaza or anywhere else on Miracle Mile this weekend, you don’t have to worry about paying extra for parking. The city said its municipal garages, parking meters, and parking lots will have their usual rates this holiday weekend.
Parking garages typically charge $ 1 per 30 minutes or $ 1 per 20 minutes after four hours. According to the city’s website, the maximum fee is $ 18. Paid parking is typically $ 3 an hour and city lots are $ 4 an hour.
Most, if not all, paid parking lots and parking lots offer people the option to pay using the PayByPhone app.
Here’s a tip: if you’re looking for free kids’ activities this weekend, the city is hosting its first annual family literacy festival on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Coral Gables War Memorial Youth Center, 405 University Drive.
The festival features food trucks and a variety of activities, including an outdoor Scholastic book fair, a petting zoo, and an augmented reality game called Magical Park.
