Two weeks after voters in cities across Miami-Dade County elected new mayors and commissioners, voters in three cities will be back at the polls for a second round on Tuesday.
The polls opened at 7 a.m. for five runoffs in Miami Beach, Hialeah, and Sunny Isles Beach. The vote ends at 7 p.m.
In Miami Beach there are two runoff elections for seats on the City Commission. In Group I, former Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez meets business owner Raquel Pacheco. In Group III, planning council member Alex Fernandez faces investor Stephen Cohen.
In Hialeah there are two runoff elections for seats on the city council. In Group VI, business owner Angelica Pacheco competes against law student Bryan Calvo at Florida International University. In group VII, voters choose between sales manager Luis Rodriguez and Maylin Villalonga, who works in banking.
In Sunny Isles Beach, voters are electing a new mayor: Commissioner Dana Goldman meets interim mayor Larisa “Laura” Svechin. After the resignation of the former mayor George “Bud” Scholl in August, a special election was called.
Runoff elections were called after none of the candidates received a majority of the votes in any of the five local races on November 2. Getters can be chosen.
Few voters are likely to cast their votes. The turnout in the three cities with runoff elections was between 5.1% and 7.6% before the elections on Tuesday. The turnout in the elections on November 2nd was around 17.6% in the district.
Voters must hand in their ballot papers on election day at the polling stations assigned to them. Voters can find their assigned voting location by checking their voter information card, calling 305-499-VOTE, or visiting the Miami-Dade County Elections Department’s website at www.iamelectionready.org.
Postal voting documents are accepted until 7 p.m. on election day. Voters can cast their ballots in person at one of four locations: the Miami-Dade Electoral Department at 2700 NW 87th Avenue in Doral; the Stephen P. Clark Center, Elections Branch Office, 111 NW 1st Street, Miami; the North Dade Regional Library at 2455 NW 183rd St. in Miami Gardens; or the South Dade Regional Library at 10750 SW 211th St. in Cutler Bay.
