Miami Seaside is scrapping plans for particular spring break occasions this 12 months – NBC 6 South Florida

Miami Beach officials have chosen not to work with a production company to host sporting events, concerts and outdoor films for this year’s spring break amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Commissioners voted on Wednesday against a point where the city would have hosted curated gatherings like Thursday Flicks, Friday Concerts and Saturday Grooves.

“We’re still open, we just don’t want big gatherings,” said Dan Gelber, Mayor of Miami Beach.

The idea was to stage and organize events and prevent young college spring breakers from drinking and partying and sometimes causing violence in the middle of the street. The aim was to prevent a possible COVID-19 event in South Florida.

“We tried researching programming and alternative events to try and control some of it. I’m not sure it will work, but we were willing to at least experiment, but instead of Covid we can ‘I’ll do that not really, ”said Gelber before the vote on Wednesday.

Restaurants and the hospitality industry, vital to South Beach’s very existence, have borne the brunt of the pandemic. Traders say they are eager to accommodate spring breakers.

“This is what brings Miami Beach to life,” said a waiter at the Garden House Restaurant, one of South Beach’s newer restaurants. “All tourists who come to Miami Beach from Atlanta, the Carolinas, New York. That can generate different income for other restaurants in our area.”

Commissioner Michael Gongora was against the idea.

“It’s like talking both sides of the mouth, social distance, wearing a mask, but we’re going to spend $ 1 million programming a big party on the beach, so no spring break this year,” said Gongora.
