MIAMI BEACH, Florida (AP) – A three-story apartment building in South Florida was evacuated after an inspector discovered structural damage in an empty residential unit.
Firefighters in Miami Beach were called into the apartment building on Saturday evening, said spokeswoman Melissa Berthier in an email. A municipal building inspector identified a floor system failure and “excessive deflection” on an exterior wall.
The building was evacuated out of caution, said Berthier.
The building contains 24 units, and 11 units were uninhabited. Only one person needed help finding other accommodation.
The evacuation comes after several residential buildings were assessed in response to the partial collapse of the Champlain Towers South in Surfside, which killed at least 24 people and 121 people are still missing.
On Friday, North Miami Beach residents were evicted from the 156-unit Crestview Towers after they were classified as structurally and electrically unsafe.
And a 72-unit condominium building in Kissimmee, Florida was reported to district officials Tuesday after contractors said there were “significant” structural problems. Some residents opted to stay 14 days in county-paid hotels while others stayed in their homes despite the warning, the Orlando Sentinel reported.
