Governor DeSantis is partially accountable for COVID variants by making it a “wedge drawback,” suggests the Mayor of Miami Seashore

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was at the end of more vitriol on liberal news networks over the weekend when Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber accused the Republican of trying to divide the public over COVID-19.

Gelber suggested that while the governor showed “pretty good” bipartisan leadership at the start of the pandemic, he turned the health crisis into a “wedge problem”.

“And then he just realized that there was a political opportunity if he did this through a supposed freedom,” Gelber said on Sunday on CNN. “Which, of course, it isn’t. We need vaccines for children in school. We ask people to do things that don’t even endanger their neighbors or strangers.”

Gelber noted a particular problem with DeSantis’ campaign website for the sale of beer koozies, which is related to Dr. Anthony Fauci made fun of. The mayor claimed that it was a “contributing factor to the crisis” when leaders like DeSantis made it “political”.

Gelber’s comments came after previously accusing the governor of trying not to take the vaccine.

Other Florida Democrats like Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings said over the weekend that citizens should be “outraged” that DeSantis is not being more transparent and is going in front of the cameras to provide health updates. The governor’s office hit back to say even though DeSantis doesn’t have daily public events, which doesn’t mean he’s not working on fighting the virus.

The media also used DeSantis as a punching bag throughout the pandemic for refusing to enforce restrictive mandates on par with those of his liberal counterparts. CNN’s Jim Acosta suggested last year that the Delta variant be referred to as the “DeSantis variant” instead. In contrast, Acosta’s coverage of COVID spikes in blue states was significantly more subdued.

The Miami Herald similarly blamed DeSantis on Friday for acting “selfishly” and “peddling treatment instead of prevention” with the Omicron variant.

“Omicron is what happens when we act selfishly and deny that we are connected to the rest of the world in our common humanity,” wrote columnist Fabiola Santiago.
