Miami Seaside volunteer efforts intensify as the quantity of waste will increase – NBC 6 South Florida

Volunteers will hit the sand in Miami Beach on Sunday for a weekly cleanup to make our beaches a better, cleaner place.

Organizer Clean Miami Beach says they are getting more requests for these events because there is more pollution.

“The biggest problem areas are the areas that the city does not maintain, especially the causeways,” said Sophie Ringel, founder of Clean Miami Beach jet skis or boats and unfortunately they leave all their rubbish behind. “

In 2019 and 2020, Clean Miami Beach says they collected over 20,500 pounds of trash.

Ringel would like to get in touch more with the younger generation. She says the group cleaned up 112 pounds of trash over two blocks in 30 minutes after high school seniors who enjoyed a day on the water left their trash.

The problem is something they say they are dealing with all the time.

One solution, says Ringel, is conversation and education.

“We will reach out to the superintendent for a proposal with a presentation, and we may even be able to provide initial training on plastics in general at all schools in Miami-Dade County,” said Ringel.

Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber has partnered with the organization and is expected to participate in the cleanup as well.
