NORTH MIAMI BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) – A man was taken into custody after a chaotic confrontation with police officers – meters from a restaurant where Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber dined.

Officials responded to the scene near the Lucali restaurant on Bay Road in 1930 on Wednesday night.

The officers were originally stopped by a local resident who said the man threatened him and others.

According to an arrest report, the man threatened to “cut their throats”.

“It was a hand grenade that was ready to go,” said the spectator who witnessed the incident. “The guy is going crazy, screaming and screaming profanity.”

A cell phone video showed the man yelling at the police.

The man said when the police arrived the arrest had turned into chaos.

The police wrote in their arrest report that the suspect was [their] marked vehicle and quickly became verbally aggressive and said ‘F *** A ** N *****, I’ll F *** YOU UP.’ “

“‘BOOM!’ You tried it twice and it wasn’t even alarmed, ”said the witness.

Eventually the arrest became physical. However, the cell phone video does not show the arrest.

Officials arrested Travis Hawthorne and charged him with assaulting a police officer.

While the arrest was taking place, Gelber was having dinner a few meters away.

The witness said he asked the mayor to get up from his table and witness the police incident, but Gelber remained seated.

“He’s the top cop after all,” said the man. “He is the chief of police, along with his colleagues on the commission. If, on that one night when he was in the wrong place at the right time, he could see what they go through every day, it would have been priceless. “

7News spoke to the mayor, who said he knew the man in question, called the police and the chief of police, and arranged for an officer to be there minutes later.

The mayor also told 7News that the man who took his picture was loud, threatening and verbally abused as he had dinner with his family. He said he did not want to come out and take part in the spectacle when the man was arrested.
