Man dies after capturing in Miami Seaside; Police chief guarantees elevated presence – WSVN 7News | Miami Information, Climate, Sports activities

MIAMI BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) – A man has died after gunfire was fired in Miami Beach, and the city police chief has vowed to step up the police presence to contain the recent violence.

Miami Beach Police responded to the 2300 block of Pine Tree Drive at around 9:20 p.m. Monday. According to police, a man who was later identified as 27-year-old Suwaye Amadou was found dead.

About 20 minutes earlier, police responded to reports of gunfire on Sixth Street and Collins Avenue but found no victim at the scene. Detectives are working to determine if the two scenes are linked.

“It’s a terrible event,” said Miami Beach Police Chief Richard Clements. “Our hearts are with the victim’s family. We will do everything in our power to bring the person who committed the crime to justice. “

The following afternoon, Clements held a press conference outside the department’s headquarters where he outlined a plan for an increased law enforcement presence in Miami Beach that would begin immediately.

“We are dealing with behavior now and making sure that behavior stays in line,” said Clements.

Starting Tuesday night, Miami-Dade cops will be helping patrol the city and Coral Gables cops will join the effort over the weekend.

“We had originally planned to continue our increased personnel efforts from this Friday. We’re going to change that now, ”said Clements.

Also, the parking garages in the entertainment district will close at 8 p.m. to keep the beach safe during Spring Break, Miami’s busiest time of year.

“We are also ready to close the MacArthur Causeway if necessary in the event of a traffic collapse,” said Clements.

In the past few days, police said they made over 900 arrests, a third of which were criminal offenses. Half of those arrested came from abroad. The officers confiscated 78 firearms.

“I can assure you that the Miami Beach Police Department did everything in their power to not only protect the residents here, but also to make sure that those who visit our city are safe and we will continue to do so. We are not going to stop, we are not going to stall and we are going to make all necessary adjustments to our current plan to make sure we can continue to do this, ”said Clements.

Shortly after Clements announced the change in policing, officers were called to the Second Street and Ocean Drive area after a gun was fired. A man was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital after he accidentally shot himself in the leg, according to police.

“He lay down, somehow stilled it, washed over it,” said Jay Jones, who is visiting from Ohio.

As police prepare to control spring breakers’ behavior, Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber said one of the city’s top concerns is the coronavirus pandemic.

“We have a pandemic, including what I think is really some kind of big center for the variant,” he said. “It’s all very dangerous and it could actually spread easily.”

Enforcing the city’s COVID-19 guidelines has become a challenge for executives thanks to an executive order from Florida Governor Ron DeSantis that prevents cities like Miami Beach from imposing COVID-19-related fines.

“The governor said we couldn’t do that,” said Gelber. “Recently he said there is nothing we can do to encourage this type of compliance. We do our best. “

Police said Amadou is a South Florida resident and is looking for advice on his case.

If you have information about the fatal shots, call the Miami Beach Police or Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous and may be eligible for a $ 3,000 reward.
