“Confederate Currency: The Color of Money”

Did you know that Southern Confederate money had hidden images of enslaved people?

African American artist John W. Jones turned these images into beautiful, colorful paintings.

The paintings are now on display in the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center in Broward County.

His goal is to instill a sense of dignity in these enslaved people – and to shed new light on the relationship between slavery and America’s economic power.

“People don’t really learn that. It overlooks the realization that America’s greatness in terms of economic power would not have been there if it hadn’t been for the enslaved individuals on whose backs it was built, ”said Dwayne Rayner, co-produced the exhibition and the executive is director of the organization Partners In Racial Justice.

Makiba Foster, the library’s regional director, also came to Sundial to discuss the story depicted in this artwork.

The exhibition is entitled “Confederate Currency: The Color of Money” and is open to the public until January 2022. More information can be found here.

Horses that heal hearts

Almost one in four children in the United States grows up in a drug-abused home, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

There is a documentary called “Without Wings” that focuses on Olszewski’s story and the children she helped. This film will premiere on Saturday at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival.

That was the story of Liz Olszewski. Eventually, she founded Horses Healing Hearts, a group where children who grew up at home with substance abuse can find healing by learning how to ride and care for horses.
