The Moxy Lodge opens in Miami Seashore, Florida

Another New York import has arrived in Miami Beach – but this one arrives with a tropical Miami-meets-Havana style and a bright open-air layout.

The Moxy South Beach, the first resort hotel under the Moxy brand from Marriott International, comes from the Lightstone development group. Lightstone operates three Moxy hotels in New York, but the Miami version is something new. Now officially opening and taking reservations on Washington Avenue, the eight-story 202-room hotel focuses on the idea of indoor and outdoor spaces, a popular concept in the COVID-19 era.

The guests have space to get outside easily. Two pools, a beach club, rooftop lounge, and outdoor movie screening area, plus six dining and drinking concepts, most of which have outdoor seating. But there are also meeting studios that lead into a courtyard and a fitness center with an outdoor gym. The hotel’s public areas offer space for social distancing with poolside cabanas and sealed dining tables.

“There’s an ethos of indoor and outdoor living that pervades the property and is particularly suited to today’s environment,” said Mitchell Hochberg, president of Lightstone. “Every area has an external component. . . . . Paired with a distinctive design that is based on the local culture and a playful and carefree atmosphere that you simply cannot get at this price in Miami Beach. ”

Room rates start at $ 159 per night, which is enough to grab the average tourist’s attention. But the mood is pretty attractive too.

Step into the lobby on Washington Avenue and play table football. Or use the pay phone to request a horoscope reading from the resident astrologer @bassfunkdaddy. This place has a resident astrologer! He can tell you if you are getting sunburn or not.

When you swim in the pool on the terrace on the second floor of the hotel, you can look down into the lobby through a cut-out area (it just follows that people in the lobby can look up and see you). The shallow lounge pool on the eighth floor is surrounded by day beds in the shape of lily pads.

Lightstone hired the team behind Miami’s beloved Coyo Taco and 1-800-Lucky for the six dining and drinking concepts, one of which is right in the lobby. Check in using a contactless service and order a cocktail from Bar Moxy (you can also sit at the bar). Across from the lobby bar is the all-day bodega and taco stand Los Buenos, which serves breakfast, tacos, burrito bowls, and cafecito (and other coffee drinks, but why? This is Miami. Get the cafecito).

On the second floor is the open-air rooftop restaurant and the Serena bar, which draws on the terrace restaurants of Oaxaca and Mexico City. Expect plenty of shareable dishes and cocktails, which makes this a good place for brunch, drinks with friends at sunset, or long lunches of cocktails when you manage to get away from your desk.

Move on to the eighth floor and you will find The Upside Bar, which is home to the aforementioned lounge pool and outdoor movie screening area. There are 350 degree views of the Atlantic Ocean and Miami Beach. Unfortunately for local grifters, The Upside is only open to hotel guests and private events.

There are two other concepts for Moxy Miami Beach: Como Como, a seafood restaurant that focuses on a charcoal grill (there is also a raw food bar). Como Como is slated to open in April and will contain a tequila tree sculpture that waives – what else? – Tequila, and let’s just call it a tequila fountain. If you think we’re missing a tequila fountain, you don’t know us.

Also in April, Mezcalista, a mezcal lounge with DJs and more than 100 types of mezcals and tequila, opens. Our only advice is: consider providing Uber.

The bedrooms were designed by the Rockwell Group, who also designed the common areas. They take advantage of the seemingly endless sunlight of Miami Beach and mimick the cabins of the ocean liner (only your windows are much bigger than a porthole). They show works by famous artists on South Beach, courtesy of Miami artist Aquarela Sabol. We know Pablo Picasso would have loved it here.

There are a few elements that set the Moxy South Beach apart, but Hochberg believes it’s the variety of experiences that the hotel offers.

“There are few hotels in South Beach that offer the breadth of experiences under one roof that you can find in Moxy South Beach – especially at an affordable price,” he said. “With two pools and six restaurants and bars, guests can enjoy a sunset drink and a bite at the Serena, an elegant seafood dinner at Como Como, or enjoy a taco in the Los Buenos lobby while heading to the Moxy Beach Club . or do all of the above. “

We’re definitely down for all of the above.
