Police Chief: Suspected driver runs over officers in North Miami Seashore, a minimum of 1 officer fires gun – WSVN 7News | Miami Information, Climate, Sports activities

NORTH MIAMI BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) – A suspected driver ran over a police officer trying to prevent them from escaping, the North Miami Beach Police Chief said, causing at least one officer to fire his gun at the driver.

It happened around 1 p.m. on Thursday near Northeast 172nd Street and Biscayne Boulevard.

According to North Miami Beach Police Chief Richard Rand, a red and white car accident occurred north of the area where the shooting took place and ended up in The Reserve at Marina Palms condominium.

“The officers who [at the complex] were marked for a hit-and-run that had just occurred, ”said Rand. “Somehow the two vehicles ended up here in this parking lot. An officer sat in the parking lot and did another investigation. He was notified that, ‘Hey, these two cars were just involved in a hit and run accident.’ The officer got out of his vehicle and tried to contact the two parties in these vehicles. “

Rand continued, “The woman who drove the red vehicle tried to escape again and actually hit the policeman, which resulted in him hitting the ground and trying to escape. The officer was in front of the vehicle, whereupon shots were fired and K-9 was used to stop the threat. “

The police did not confirm whether the officer who was run over was the same one who shot the woman. The police also did not say which law enforcement agency the officer who fired the gun is with.

The boss said it was not clear if the woman was hit by a bullet.

“They followed her,” said resident Stuart Weiser. “She drove into this residence, couldn’t get through the gate, so she tried to back away. The police tried to open their door. She ran over the policeman and the other policeman shot her. “

An aerial view of the scene shows a red vehicle that has been cordoned off by police tape. The rear window of the red vehicle appears to have been shot out and there was something on the floor that looks like blood.

The officer sustained injuries to his midsection and lower body and was admitted to a local hospital in a serious condition. The driver was also taken to a local hospital in stable condition.

Aventura Police and North Miami Beach Police units both responded to the scene. Biscayne Boulevard near 172nd Street has been closed while police work on the scene, but the southbound lanes have been reopened.

Drivers are asked to look for an alternative route in the area.

Rand said the driver of the red car could face multiple charges, including a heavy battery with a motor vehicle on a police officer, depending on the officer’s condition.

Members of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement are assisting officers in investigating the incident.
