Miami Seashore Votes to Ban Alcohol Gross sales After 2:00 AM – WSVN 7News | Miami Information, Climate, Sports activities

MIAMI BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) – Miami Beach residents voted Tuesday night to ban alcohol sales after 2 a.m. in hopes of curbing crime and chaos in the city’s entertainment district.

Mitch Novack, a beach dweller and business owner, said the chaos needs to stop.

“You have to close the party,” said Novack. “The city will finally get this situation under control, bring back public safety.”

Just this weekend, Novack posted a video of a brutal brawl just steps from his hotel, near Ninth Street and Collins Avenue.

The victim, Luis Carlos Herrera, spoke from his hospital bed.

“They were homophobia,” said Herrera, “and I remember telling them to stop bothering and annoying me. Then someone came up to me and kicked me in the face, and after that I don’t remember anything. “

David Wallack, owner of Mango’s in South Beach, said stopping alcohol sales after 2 a.m. would hurt businesses.

“It’s not about the money I’d lose,” said Wallack. “It’s the money my employees will lose. These are families who work very, very hard and in order for them to earn a lot less at some point they have to say that even if they have been working here for 20 years they have to look at me and say that I feel like it does I’m sorry, but I have to go to work where I can make a living. “

Miami Beach’s newly-elected Mayor Dan Gelber said this new alcohol ban will be the first step to change the stigma of this stretch of beach, but disagrees with those who say this new rollback action will lead to that they are losing tons of cash.

“Most of the places in our city are 2 a.m.,” said Gelber. “There are clearly business models that work for our city where people make a nice profit, people work, employees are paid and they don’t have to party all night, 24 hours for that to happen. It happens everywhere and it even happens here so this is just a business model tied to a couple of bars that have created a lot of clutter in an area that needs to be pacified, that needs to change how it feels, and that will happen.”
