Joe’s Stone Crab opens in Miami Seashore for the season on Friday, October 15

On Friday October 15th, Joe’s Stone Crab opens its 108th season around the sun.

The Miami Beach restaurant, which has been around longer than the city it is based in, opens punctually at 5 p.m. for dinner, and the bar opens at 4 p.m. for people who want to secure a table (and a drink) while they wait ).

The opening coincides, of course, with the official start of the stone crab season 2021-22. Stephen Sawitz, Joe’s Chief Operating Officer (and great-grandson of the restaurant’s founder) is looking forward to a ton of talons. “We are optimistic about this year’s season,” says Sawitz. “Of course we never know what we’re going to get until the opening day, but the initial feedback looks promising and we always go into our new season full of hope and excitement to see the first catch.”

Sawitz says that instead of a new menu or new cocktails, he can best serve his loyal guests a “huge piece of normality”. That means that while many of the COVID precautions from last year remain in place – including improved cleaning and encouraged social distancing – the process will be less “visible and intrusive” on the food at Joe’s. “We are committed to making our guests feel safe, secure, and normal by providing the great food and great service that they have known and trusted for 108 seasons,” says Sawitz.

Although Joe’s has added back some tables and seating capacity that were lost last season, it will remain under capacity. Additionally, the restaurant accepts a limited number of table reservations each night through resy.com – a policy that was implemented for the first time in Joe’s history at the height of the pandemic last year to aid social distancing.

And with all of the new faces that have moved to Miami in the past few months, there might actually be some newcomers to Joe.

Sawitz has a tip for every newcomer: “New guests should know that there is something for everyone on the menu.”

Translation: Joe’s serves a wide variety of seafood dishes as well as USDA prime matured steaks. And of course Joe’s famous fried chicken – a bargain for just under $ 9 per order.

A trip to Joe’s wouldn’t be complete without cracking open some cute stone crab claws. Sawitz suggests taking the time to enjoy them.

“Every waiter is ready to show guests how to eat stone crabs, so don’t be afraid to ask for a brief introduction to the delicacy,” suggests Joe’s manager.

If you’re still wary of eating, Joe’s Take Away serves the same stone crab take away right next door. Order claws and sides and take them one block to the beach for the ultimate social distance picnic.
