Winker’s Diner, one of three Groot hospitality restaurants in the former Firestone Garage in Miami Beach, has closed. The closure was abrupt; the restaurant closed shortly before a planned New Year’s Eve party with a disco inferno theme.
A representative from Groot Hospitality confirmed the sudden closure, stating that Winker was closed to make way for a new Groot restaurant.
The replacement to be named will be opened in the next few months; No concept was announced.
Winker’s, a diner / deli that specializes in pastrami, matzo ball soup and milkshakes, opened in September 2021 together with two sister companies after three years of planning and restoring the former garage at 1575 Alton Road. in south beach.

The building was first constructed in the 1930s as a Firestone tire shop and repair shop, and its giant sign greeted motorists in Miami Beach for decades. The garage closed in 2015 and Grutman vowed to revive the new space.
In an interview in August 2021, Grutman told the New Times, “I love iconic, historical stuff. The building is Art Deco and to me it feels like a representation of everything Miami Beach has to offer. Taking a building that may have seen its last days and giving it a new life is very cool. ”
Although Winker’s is closed, Toothfairy (a Dallas Wynne-run bakery that specializes in cakes, homemade twinkies, and soft ice cream) and Sushi Fly Chicken (an izakaya that serves sushi, dumplings, and fried chicken) will stay open.
