How do you start the Art Basel marathon correctly? For Ruinart, champagne is always the answer. This year, the nearly 300-year-old house invited friends of the brand and art enthusiasts to celebrate the theme of the artist, David Shrigley.
This kick-off party for Basel was everything you can expect from it: a bit wild and very energetic. Visitors like Jemima Kirke, Hari Nef and Pritika Swarup were greeted with Shrigley’s life-size interpretations of the artist’s hilarious designs. Guests danced next to a large piece that read “News: It won’t be like this forever” while others sipped one, two, maybe three glasses of champagne next to a swirling, worm-like painted figure standing nearby. Other pieces, like an earth painting blown up, served as the perfect photo opportunity for the evening’s attendees to let their friends (or Instagram followers) know that they’d landed on the scene.
While DJ Timo Weiland carried the party’s lively melodies, ornate culinary pieces by aspiring chef Flynn McGarry drifted around, making taste buds tinkle with delight. For those who were there, the excitement of the evening may have made it difficult to see Shrigley’s entire installation. Fortunately, the series stayed in the Ruinart Lounge and seen virtually, so guests could return and perhaps enjoy it without being too foggy.
