Miami Seaside Mayor Dan Gelber is re-elected; Voters assist 2 a.m. alcohol ban – WSVN 7News | Miami Information, Climate, Sports activities
MIAMI BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) – Dan Gelber was re-elected as Miami Beach Mayor, and a drive to end alcohol sales at 2 a.m. received support from voters in a poll that officials called a straw.
7News cameras caught Gelber greeting supporters at a guard party at the Betsy Hotel, located on the 1400 block of Ocean Drive Tuesday night.
Gelber made it to re-election with more than 62% of the vote.
The mayor took the opportunity to thank his supporters. He also admitted that much remains to be done to improve the quality of life for Miami Beach residents.
The controversial move to withdraw the last call in the entertainment district from 5 a.m. to 2 a.m. also met with approval from voters. More than 56% supported the change.
However, whether or not it is enforced is at the discretion of the mayor and the city commission.
Gelber said he will ask staff to legislate to make the alcohol sales ban official at 2 a.m.
During the watch party, Gelber also spoke about the topic of the last call. He said that at the end of the day, that’s what the people of Miami Beach want.
