A 17-year-old suspect was shot and killed by a Miami-Dade deputy while the sheriff’s office was serving a warrant in Miami Beach, authorities said.
Authorities said it happened at 785 81st Street, an address that corresponds to an apartment building.
According to Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz, officials were serving a warrant for firearm violations at the address and had announced their presence over a speaker system.
When deputies entered the residence, the teen “exited his bedroom armed with a firearm,” the sheriff said. One deputy fired in response.
The subject who was shot was pronounced dead at the scene by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. According to authorities, they’re still investigating whether the suspect opened fire, but it “does not appear that he fired at all.”
Another subject, an 18-year-old man, was arrested.
The deceased is “an adjudicated adult with multiple felonious history on his criminal record. He is currently on probation for firearms violations… and is a registered gang member with [an ankle] monitor on,” Cordero-Stutz said.
Deputies said the second suspect is algo a gang member, wearing an ankle monitor and has an extensive criminal past for firearms violations.
Their names were not immediately revealed. Authorities said they lived together at the residence, and NBC6 has learned that they are brothers.
Cordero-Stutz said the warrant being served was for both of the suspects.
“Search warrants are always one of our most dangerous actions that we and all law enforcement face,” she said. “We do everything that we can to be proactive, to identify, to let people know [that we’re here]… clearly this individual who was already in violation of the law and committing multiple felonies chose to exit armed and confront our sheriff’s deputy.”
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate whether the use of force was justified, as is standard in these shootings.
